When it rains in Val Seriana
Mountain weather turns. These are the days we actually enjoy the rain — arcades, cellars, frescoes and a long lunch.
Go down, not up
Cloud sits on the ridges and leaves the valley floor dry more often than you would think. Clusone, twenty minutes down the road, has arcades that keep you dry the whole way around the old centre, painted facades that look better wet, and an astronomical clock from 1583.
Make lunch the plan
A cellar table, casoncelli, a slow bottle. This is the day for the three-hour lunch you keep saying you do not have time for.
Low-level walks that still work
The river path along the Serio is flat, forested and fine in light rain. The lower forest loop from Spiazzi stays sheltered. Take a proper rain layer rather than an umbrella — the wind in the valley makes short work of umbrellas.
And if it clears
It often does, late. Keep the sunset walk in your back pocket: twenty minutes up to the meadow, and the valley steaming after rain is the best light of the week.
