Gelateria da Claudio

Frescoes, gelato and a very old clock

Overview

Clusone is twenty minutes down the valley and looks nothing like the mountains above it. Frescoed walls, arcades, a piazza built for standing around in.

The astronomical clock on the Palazzo Comunale has been keeping its own strange time since 1583. After that, the gelateria on the square, and the two sequoias in the garden behind it that nobody warns you about.

Why we love it

Because it is the day that convinces people the Orobie is not only about walking uphill.

Basecamp tip

Go on a market morning, eat lunch late, and let the children order the gelato in Italian.

Good to know

  • Most shops close between 12:30 and 15:30.
  • The clock is easiest to read from the far corner of the square.

What to bring

  • Cash for the gelateria
  • Shoes for cobbles

If the weather changes

Rain suits Clusone. The arcades keep you dry the whole way round.
