Rifugio above Spiazzi

Walk to Vodala & lunch above the valley

Overview

The path leaves Spiazzi behind within five minutes. Larch woods, a stream, then open pasture and the first proper view back down the Val Seriana.

The rifugio appears exactly when you start thinking about food. Polenta, a plate of local cheese, maybe a beer. The way back down is shorter than it looks and passes an old shepherd's hut nobody photographs.

Why we love it

Because it is the walk we do when friends visit for the first time. It is not the hardest or the highest, but it explains the whole region in four hours.

Basecamp tip

Call the rifugio the evening before and ask if they are making casoncelli. If the answer is yes, skip breakfast.

Good to know

  • The trail is signed but the first junction above the woods is easy to miss — keep left.
  • There is a drinking fountain at the halfway pasture.
  • The rifugio closes on Tuesdays outside August.

What to bring

  • Walking shoes with grip
  • A litre of water each
  • A layer for the terrace, it cools quickly
  • Cash for lunch

If the weather changes

If the cloud drops, walk the lower forest loop from Spiazzi instead and have lunch in Gromo.
