The best hikes from Spiazzi di Gromo

Six routes that start within walking distance of the village, from an hour before dinner to a full day on the ridge.

The best hikes from Spiazzi di Gromo

Start with the rifugio walk

If you only do one walk here, walk up to the rifugio. Three to four hours, 540 metres of climbing, larch woods at the bottom and open pasture at the top — and lunch waiting at the turnaround point.

It explains the whole region in a morning: how steep the valley is, how quickly the forest gives way to grazing, and how seriously people take a plate of polenta at altitude.

Short walks when the day is already full

Not every day needs a summit. The meadow track above the last houses takes twenty minutes and ends at a bench facing the sunset. The lower forest loop is under two hours and stays shaded in August.

  • The hour before dinner — 1.8 km, 90 m, all ages
  • Lower forest loop from the village — shaded, doable in trainers
  • Meadow loop above Spiazzi — pushchair-hostile, child-friendly

When to go

June to early October is the reliable window for the higher routes. Snow can linger on north-facing traverses into June, and most rifugi close from late September. Spring and autumn are quieter, cooler and photograph better.

What locals actually carry

A litre of water each, a warm layer for the terrace, shoes with grip, and cash — most rifugi still prefer it. Phone signal is patchy above the treeline, so download the route before you leave the apartment.
